T. E. Lawrence of Arabia and Sharif Faisal Bin Hussein based their headquarters in Wadi Rum during the Arab revolt against the Ottomans in World War I. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage Site List, under both the natural and cultural significance categories. A maze of monolithic rockscapes rises up from the desert floor to heights of 1,750m creating a natural challenge for serious mountaineers. Hikers can enjoy the tranquility of the boundless empty spaces.
