Heat Wave Prompts Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to Heighten Safety Measures at Tourist Sites

AMMAN — August 12, 2023

In anticipation of an impending heat wave sweeping across the region, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in conjunction with the Department of Antiquities, has issued a stern advisory to ensure the well-being of visitors and workers at popular tourist destinations.

Minister Makram Qaisi, heading the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, has called for comprehensive safety measures to be put in place at archaeological sites and landmarks to counteract the scorching temperatures. The minister emphasized the importance of safeguarding the health and comfort of both locals and tourists who may be visiting these historical sites during the period of heightened temperatures.

Fadi Balawi, the Director General of the Department of Antiquities, has also voiced his concerns about the imminent heatwave. Balawi has reached out to local authorities across various governorates, urging them to initiate emergency response plans. These plans encompass a range of precautionary actions, including the provision of essential items like umbrellas, hats, and cold water. The goal is to shield both workers and visitors from the potentially hazardous effects of excessive heat, such as heat strokes and exhaustion.

Balawi highlighted that all antiquities departments have diligently implemented safety protocols and introduced first aid measures to address any emergencies arising from the extreme weather conditions. He called for a collective effort to exercise the utmost caution while navigating through archaeological sites and attractions, especially in the face of the upcoming heatwave.

With temperatures predicted to soar in the coming days, the joint efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Department of Antiquities are a timely reminder of the significance of visitor safety. Tourists are advised to heed the safety guidelines provided at each site and prioritize their well-being while enjoying the cultural and historical richness that Jordan has to offer.

As the nation prepares for the challenging weather conditions, it is evident that the Jordanian government remains committed to preserving the legacy of its heritage while ensuring the safety and comfort of all those who wish to experience it firsthand.
