Qatraneh Castle in Jordan

Qatraneh Castle is an old Ottoman castle located in the town of Qatraneh in Jordan. It is about 90 kilometers south of Amman, the capital of Jordan. You can find it on the Desert Highway, on the way to Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba.

The castle was built in the year 1531 (937 Hijri) to help travelers, especially pilgrims going from the Levant (like Syria and Jordan) to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It provided water and protection for them. It was also built to protect the Hijaz Railway.

Qatraneh Castle is made of limestone and basalt stones. Inside, the walls are covered with plaster.

In 2025, Qatraneh Castle was added to Jordan list of official tourist sites.
