Jordan Medical Tourism Booms: Aiming for 230,000 Visitors, Stakeholders Seek Streamlined Coordination and Enhanced Facilities

Jordan’s medical tourism industry is experiencing a remarkable surge, as the Jordan Hotel Association (JHA) anticipates a staggering 100 per cent increase in medical tourists, with a projected total of 230,000 visitors this year compared to 2022. While this growth is a positive sign for the country’s economy, challenges are emerging, prompting calls for improved coordination among stakeholders.

Travel agents specialized in medical tourism are pushing for the creation of a unified application that streamlines communication and processes among all parties involved. Tariq, a medical tourism agent, has been forced to redirect his reservations and travel packages to neighboring countries due to the mounting difficulties faced in Jordan.

The primary issues causing frustration for both Tariq and his clients include prolonged wait times at borders, lack of cooperation, inflated procedure costs, and the absence of a centralized department overseeing medical tourism.

Tariq emphasized that Jordan boasts top-notch medical facilities and professionals in the region, but easing procedures and collaborating with travel agents would yield significant benefits for patients and the economy. He highlighted the need for special lanes at the airport and a designated medical doctor to handle each case, understanding that patients, often unwell and fatigued, struggle with lengthy security checks and waiting hours.

To address these challenges, Tariq proposed the development of a comprehensive multi-lingual application encompassing all necessary documents, permits, and diagnoses. Such an application should involve cooperation between the Ministry of Health, the Jordan Tourism Board, and the Public Security Directorate, facilitating a smoother process for patients.

Hussein Hlalat, spokesperson for the JHA, praised Jordan’s status as a renowned leader in medical tourism. With concerted efforts from the JHA and tourism authorities, they aim to achieve the target of 230,000 medical tourists, a significant increase from approximately 91,000 visitors in 2022.

To bolster medical tourism, the association has launched a 2023 plan with a strong focus on electronic marketing through platforms like the ‘Visit Jordan Medical’ page on social media, which has gained a substantial following. Additionally, efforts are underway to develop the “Salamatk” platform, and marketing campaigns are being conducted in Palestine, Iraq, and Algeria through various media channels.

As Jordan takes the mantle of the regional center for medical and therapeutic tourism this year, the country is optimistic about further boosting its position as a premier destination for medical travelers.
